Change The Shape Of Things To Come
The life we live today and the changes we have undergone here in Ireland over the past thirty years have seen a sharp rise in stress and stress related illness including panic attacks, insomnia, depression, anger management, fears and phobias.
In addition, weight mis-management has resulted in obesity, heart related illness and Type 2 diabetes to name but a few such stress related illnesses.
Medicines help manage some illness – however we now know some illness does not benefit from medication alone and psychotherapy and psychotheraputic techniques have a role in supporting such clients.
An eclectic and holistic approach is essential and benefits anyone faced with 21st century challenges.
Challenges such as living with chronic pain, unhealthy behaviour patterns and poor stress management has led to an increase in anger which in turn affects relationships.
Choosing to tackle the root causes leaves you free to move forward in a positive frame of mind and secure in the knowledge that you have done what you can to help change patterns of thought and behaviour which do not serve you well.
Such change impacts on your mental and physical health and that of those close to you – in both your personal and professional life.
The following is a brief summary of some of the Solution Focused Therapies used in Dun Laoghaire Therapy Centre - to facilitate clients to access the ‘root cause’ of the presenting issue(s), address the impact, explore the coping mechanisms used to date and to introduce them to new coping skills and personal management techniques.
Such a holistic approach tackles the challenges faced by clients on a number of fronts and they move forward empowered with newly acquired skills and an appreciation of taking time to relax, review and re-evaluate many of their personal operating systems. In other words - What brought me to where I am now? Am I happy where I am now? If not - why am I staying there? Am I going where I want to go? If not -what can I do to help myself go in the direction I want to go? Who will be affected? Can I manage how I affect others? Can I manage the impact on myself? Do I want to? When do I want to introduce change? What am I prepared to do to achieve change?
As you can see the combination of techniques used challenges unhelpful thought, emotional and communication patterns and lead a client towards clear effective thinking acting and reacting.
At a time when there is no time – make time - take time. TIME FOR YOU...
Introduction to some of the Solution Focused Techniques used
Psychotherapy is an interpersonal intervention used to assist clients in problems of living.
This usually includes increasing an individual’s sense of well-being and reducing the discomforting experience.
Psychotherapists use a range of Solution Focused Techniques based on relationship building, dialogue, communication and behaviour change designed to improve the mental health of a client or to improve group relationships (such as in a family or work environment ).
Psychoanalysis is general term for approaches which attempt to provide a conceptual framework more or less independent of clinical practice rather than based on empirical analysis of clinical cases. Development is described as primarily unconscious - that is, beyond awareness - and is heavily coloured by emotion. It attempts to account for consciousness and unconsciousness.
What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?
It is guided relaxation and visualisation leading to light trance to facilitate therapeutic work. It enables the therapist to bypass your ‘critical factor’ and gives access to the subconscious mind where faulty thought processes are stored. The subconscious mind is a vast storehouse of memories – it is literal and childlike. It accepts and interprets what it sees or perceives without question.
It is particularly useful in stress management, anxiety, insomnia and for fears and phobias.
As the name suggests it is a combination of both psychotherapy and hypnotherapy – therefore it is psychotherapy carried out while the client is in a relaxed state and more open to absorbing and learning new coping techniques.
Imagine, for example that your mind is a computer hard drive. It is who you are. Imagine now, all of your life experiences to date are the floppy discs or c.d.’s. As you load each experience (or disc) you corrupt part of the hard drive. Eventually the hard drive becomes infected by a virus... that’s when hypno-psychotherapy is particularly effective. It roots out the virus and cleans both the hard drive and the disc!
Resulting in a clear thought process and appropriate feelings at appropriate times.
Neuro Linguistic Programming is sometimes referred to as “the art and science of personal excellence... “It enhances confidence, facilitates improved interpersonal communication skills and enables you to create important changes in your life and the lives of those you care about – in work or at home.
A dynamic tool used worldwide in business. NLP emphasises doing more than knowing. It is particularly effective for boosting confidence and self esteem. It helps you to achieve your goals. Control how you feel. Change unwanted habits. Enjoy activities you used to fear. Get more fun from your life!
GOLD Counselling is a technique in which our belief systems are challenged and mind mapping is used to explore our core beliefs.
It challenges how we regard ourselves and others – based on our own sometimes faulty belief system and works towards addressing how best we can examine that system and alter our perspective. Repetitive gentle questioning helps deconstruct negative primary beliefs.
For example a client presenting with a particular issue while in light trance or in a relaxed state will provide a list of words associated with a specific belief held by them and central to the presenting issue. Through mapping the connections they reveal their primary belief systems in relation to that topic. Once disclosed work continues effectively.
What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?
How you think affects how you feel! This simple truth was identified by the Greek philosopher Epictetus “...Man is disturbed not by things but by the view he takes of them...” Cognitive Behavioural Therapy teaches you to test how you are thinking. It introduces or builds healthy new beliefs and encourages supportive emotional responses to life’s crises.
It helps you recognise experiences from your past which have resulted in you believing certain things about yourself and others. It enables you to give a more productive meaning or reason to the past and encourages you to change how you respond to the present and future situations. It boosts your self-esteem and provides you with more tools to deal with yourself and others.
It is a theory of mind and brain that suggests that the operational principle of the brain is holistic, with self-organizing tendencies or, that the whole is different than the sum of its parts.
Devised by Fritz Perls and often called the ‘empty chair technique’ this technique is used effectively to assist clients to see things ‘as if’ from the perspective of another...
